While still not doing much with the hobby, I did manage to paint some Peter Laing Highlanders, with the idea of using them with "The Portable Wargame" and using "the Battle of Hook's Farm" as the scenario.
To paint the figures, I used Vallejo "Model Color" acrylic paints. I wanted a gloss coat to give them a toy soldier look. The only gloss I had at the time was Tamiya lacquer gloss clear coat. Unfortunately it started washing the acrylic paint off the figure.
I put the figures aside, as my wife and I took a trip to Pennsylvania with our new camper. When we came home I saw the figures sitting on the table and found Vallejo gloss coat, which was quickly ordered. The Highlanders finally got their shiny uniforms, which came out as I was hoping.

Splendid looking body of men! "Welcome to your gory bed, or to Victory!"
ReplyDeleteThank you. Now to put them on bases and paint the bayonets.
DeleteThey look great! I almost thought that they might be 54mm figures until I realised that they were Peter Laing figures.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Bob
That's what I like about Peter Laing figures; not too much detail to paint. I try to paint them like "Little Wars" Britains figures.
DeleteThey do look good! I miss my Peter Laing figures, lost in the mists of time!
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the old Peter Laing, not to everyone's taste but I think they have character.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really even know about Peter Laing figures until in my 40s. For many years they were my "Holy Grail". When bored sometimes I bring out some out just to look at.
DeleteThey will be perfect for a Hook’s Farm game in all their glossiness.
ReplyDeleteI really have to set up a game with them. Of course I still haven't finished painting the Highlander Brigadier yet. I wanted him to lead the Highland Brigade into battle.
DeleteThese have painted up splendidly. I look forward to seeing them in battle.

Thank you. These comments are motivating me to finish the job and get them on the table.
DeleteShiny ‘thin red line’!
ReplyDeleteWell said! I wish I had thought of that line.
