Falcon Miniatures Civil War Game

I finally got a game played using my Falcon ACW units. I used Chris Salander's Horse & Musket 2.0 for rules. The photo above shows when the Confederates suffered a severe blow, losing their last strong unit, which broke their resistance.  One reason I have been enjoying this project is painting the different units in early Civil War militia uniforms, so each unit is easily identified. By the way, the unit in the upper right with sky blue uniforms is based on the 1st Massachusetts. Being from Massachusetts, I had to paint at least one unit from the state. I was hoping for greater things from them; although at the end they made the Confederates in front of them retreat.

"Dominion of the Spear" Playthrough

I played a game of "Dominion of the Spear" to show how quickly the game plays out. I will not be giving a description of the rules; as mentioned, I think the price is low enough that most gamers could buy a set if they really want to play. By the way, to took less time to play the game as it is taking me to type out this posting.

The Picts (on top) attack the Saxon army.

At the end of turn one: a unit of ferocious Saxons have eliminated the Pict archers on the left. A unit of Pict spearmen eliminated a Saxon Spear unit on the right.

The Picts move a spear unit to replace the archers; the Saxons move up a Spear unit on their right.

Turn 2: On the Saxon left the ferocious Saxon Spearmen are broken, but not before eliminating the Spearmen in front of them. In the center the ferocious Saxon spearmen break the Picts in front of them.

End of turn 2: the Picts put their last spearmen to face the Saxon left; the Pict horsemen attack the center. The Saxons feed in their last reserves to the left.

Once again on the Saxon left both Spear units fight, and both units are demoralized and break. In the center, the ferocious Saxon spearmen eliminate the Pict horsemen, and the last Pict Spear unit is eliminated. The Saxon win a hard fought battle!

"Dominion of the Spear" Game

I mainly use Facebook to follow my hobby interests. Of course one I follow is " The Portable Wargame". One posting mentioned using  "Dominion of the Spear" rules. It's a set of rules I never heard of before. What interested me is it is a solo game that you can just use a paper and pen to play. The rules make for a quick game; the two games I played lasted three turns, and took about ten minutes. Each army has between 3 to 6 units.

The rules are available on Wargame Vault for around $5.50. Besides the rules you get 196 army lists, which, to me, is worth the price alone. Each army is made up of units that cost at least 2 points. However, units can be armored, elite, or ferocious that add points to the unit cost.

This started me thinking of using my Peter Laing ancients to form different armies. Below is a photo of a Peter Laing Pict army that I made. I can see using the army lists for The Portable Wargame Ancients game.

2mm Wargame

In the last month I not had any time to work on the hobby. Last night I made time to get in a quick 2mm game using my cigar box wargame set up. Terrain was set up randomly, and both armies had 4 infantry and 2 cavalry units.
In the end the red army captured the village, but lost 4 out of 6 units: first side to lose 2/3 of their army loses.

Old Style Toy Soldier Game

Both armies were equal in strength. Both had one spring artillery  piece, along with 2 ammunition  wagons and an ambulance. Any figure hit by a round who didn't  fall over was wounded. He would  have to go to the ambulance, and then could return to the battle.

Both armies deployed  for battle. The red shells were artillery rounds. The cannon could fire up to 4 rounds per turn. The Blue rounds were infantry. They could fire 1 round for every 6 infantrymen. They were only supposed  to  have  12 inch range: in the heat of the battle I forgot that rule. At least I forgot it for both sides.

At the bottom of the picture wounded soldiers can be seen heading towards the ambulance  to have their wounds treated. Both armies have switched  to skirmish  order to cut down on casualties.

Semi Flats Wargame: Part 4

The Green Jagers are hit from three sides.

They lose four out of six men. However, they pass their morale check.

The Jagers fall back into the protection of the village.

The Blue artillery fires on the Jagers and wipes them out.

The Green army forms a new line and the Blue Zouave Brigade suffers heavy losses.

However, the Blue army holds firm and the Green army regiments have been decimated.

The Green general calls for a retreat.

The Blue army general orders his troops  forward in pursuit.

Semi Flats Wargame Part 1

The two armies march onto the field. Blue army at top of picture, Green army on bottom.

Blue army deployed and advancing.

This game was just to get a game in. Both sides are equal, with six- 6 man regiments divided into 2 brigades, and 1 gun and crew. Each brigade had a brigadier general and for command a major general with a drummer. The rules used are from Junior General website.
I have decided to break this report into several posts. Once again, I am trying to get computer problems resolved so I am using my cell phone to do the blog for now.

Semi Flats Wargame

As mentioned before, I haven't done much with wargaming. However, the last month I did get two quick games in. One was a "No Brain Wargame", the other was a game with some of my new semi flats using Horse & Musket 2.0.

Both armies start with the same forces; 4 infantry and 2 cavalry.

As the two sides close, the blue army opens fire, killing 5 red soldiers and forcing two more to retreat. It seems like the game is going to be a quick one.

The red army brings forward their cavalry to try to turn the tide.

The red cavalry pushes back the blue infantry.

The tide seems to be changing in red's favor.

The red cavalry divides into smaller units with the hope of breaking the blue infantry once and for all.  The blue cavalry charges forward to rescue the infantry.

The red cavalry, blown from their charge, is quickly broken and the red army flees the field.

Toy Soldier Battle: Day 2

The Grey General managed to rally his army. He decided to attack the Green Army the next day.

I decided to play the game out. Although I usually roll for initiative, this part of the game Grey got to move first.

At daybreak the Grey Army launches its attack (GreyArmy on the left).

The Grey Army's left flank.

The battlefield, as seen from above the Grey's Lins.

On the Grey's left they drive off the Green's cavalry and kill two Guardsmen.

On the Grey's right, they manage to maul the Green's 1st Jagers.

The Green army takes the time to reorganize and sends forward half of the 2nd Jagers in the center.

The Green's return fire drives off the infantry holding the town and punches a large hole on the Grey's right.

The Green Army counterattacks (they won the initiative roll). The green cavalry smashes into the Grey's left, with the Guards following up.

The 2nd Jagers charge the town. The 1st Jagers capture two grey stragglers.

The 1st Jagers shake out there line and advance.

The green cavalry drives back the Grey's left.

The 2nd Jagers fire kills two Gross Gras Regiment soldiers.

The Greys right starts to collapse after the 1st Jagers volley.

At this point the Grey Army breaks and runs.

The Grey refugees flee by their General.

5 Gross Gras  soldiers are left behind.

The cavalry swings around to cut off their retreat.

The Grey prisoners are turned over to the green cavalry.

The battlefield at the end of the game.

The Green General rides through the town to view the Grey's retreat. The Grey Army lost 28 dead, 11 prisoners. The Green Army lost 11 killed.
