"Dominion of the Spear" Game

I mainly use Facebook to follow my hobby interests. Of course one I follow is " The Portable Wargame". One posting mentioned using  "Dominion of the Spear" rules. It's a set of rules I never heard of before. What interested me is it is a solo game that you can just use a paper and pen to play. The rules make for a quick game; the two games I played lasted three turns, and took about ten minutes. Each army has between 3 to 6 units.

The rules are available on Wargame Vault for around $5.50. Besides the rules you get 196 army lists, which, to me, is worth the price alone. Each army is made up of units that cost at least 2 points. However, units can be armored, elite, or ferocious that add points to the unit cost.

This started me thinking of using my Peter Laing ancients to form different armies. Below is a photo of a Peter Laing Pict army that I made. I can see using the army lists for The Portable Wargame Ancients game.

  1. Nice little force John - I have a lot of time for small armies!
I don't know the rules - you'll have to play a game and let us know how they work out

    1. I've played a couple of games already on paper. The rules are good if you want to play a campaign game in one night. As Shaun below mentions, they would be ideal for a narrative campaign game. One thing I do like is that to make Peter Laing armies, the maximum number of figures needed is 12.

  2. There are such a great set of rules for some simple quick narrative driven games. Not much decisions to be made but the games are fast! I think I have played about 20 games with them so far.

    1. I agree with your statement about narrative driven games. I think looking at most battles of the period, it seemed once engaged, there were no major decisions made by the commanders, just feed more reserves where needed. I was hoping to get some more games in but fate has dictated otherwise. Perhaps this weekend...

  3. I look forward to hearing how your gaming with them goes…

  4. There’s now a supplement to Dominion of the Spear - scenarios for 36 historical ancient battles, plus some development/optional rules.
Your Picts certainly have the look of veterans 😉
    Cheers,
