I will admit that after painting these two, somewhere down the line more figures might be painted. I will have to find some high gloss paints that don't dry out so fast. |

Refurbished Tin Soldiers
After my last post, several readers mentioned if I had any plans to repaint the figures that were in bad shape. I have always shied away from tampering with old figures, but from the sounds of it many people repaint figures that are in rough shape. I decided to try a couple of figures and paint them in toy soldier fashion.

You have done a great job on these, they look great
ReplyDeleteThank you. They got a coat of hobby acrylic paint then a heavy coat of gloss lacquer. Should have spent a couple of extra moments with the lighting though.
ReplyDeleteThey look fine! I'm on the side of re-painting very badly chipped old figures. There's a sort of link with military medals - left alone they become tarnished, but no soldier would go on parade with tarnished medals. So, I say, keep the old tin boys burnished and ready for parade! When I've done this in the past, I've used acrylics with plenty of gloss varnish, but I've also been successful with good old Humbrol gloss enamel - and it's tough. Keep going, and post more of these 'old sweats'.
ReplyDeleteYou make good points on why they should get a fresh coat of paint. They do deserve better than that. I believe they would made a great project during those periods where I'm in a funk and can get going with a project. I did have Humbrols in the past and should try to find a dealer in the states to buy more.
DeleteThey look good to me Alfront had the right of it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ross. I did rush the paint job. I wish I could find more information about semi rounds and pictures of them painted. Perhaps in some of the old Berliner Zinnfguren catalogs I have will have a book that has more information on them.
ReplyDeleteJohn, I think they look wonderful, old figures like these are really worth caring for
ReplyDeleteIan
Ian, with the feedback I've been getting, it has convinced me that it is a project to be taken up. There was some figures bought last year, which I believe the previous owner had done just that. I might even post some pictures of them.
ReplyDeleteI think I should have done some "before and after" pictures.
