Battle of Braddock Down: Battles of the English Civil War

I recently played a game from Mike Lambos' Battle of the English Civil War using Irregulars Miniatures 2mm ECW blocks, backed up with some ACW blocks. The blocks are mounted on plastic bases with yellow dots painted on front to show which direction the base is facing. In this game units are demoralized, and must try to rally. If they fail on their rally roll, they continue to retreat until they pass their rally check, or flee the field of battle.

With these rules the AI gets to move every turn. The AI forces in this game were very aggressive and closed with my army quickly.
My army was in the beginning successful at driving the enemy cavalry off the field. However, that brought my infantry within range of his musketeers, which broke three of my infantry units, which in turn fled the field. After that the battle went downhill for my army.

  1. How did you differentiate the infantry units? Mike Lambo’s rules, as written, have separate units of PIKES and others of MUSKETS which doesn’t really fit in with Irregular Miniatures nice little castings of mixed shot/pike/shot troops.

  2. It's hard to see in the photographs, but the pike units are from Irregular ECW range. The center of the unit has upraised pikes. The musketeer units are ACW line troops. I put two blocks of ACW figures on the same base to make it a large block of figures to represent massed musketeers.

    1. Thanks for the clarification. In “regular” ECW gaming I have 2mm Irregular Miniatures units of mixed pike and shot (representing, strangely enough, mixed units - with a central pike block flanked by musketeers) and units of just musketeers (representing detached shot, forlorn hopes etc). Thanks again,
      Geoff

    2. Yes, the mixed pike and shot block had me perplexed on how to represent musketeers using these rules. Perhaps not the most historically looking armies, but they work for me.

    3. No worries. Mike Lambo’s book games are generally fun games, good to help the gamer get in a quick battle “fix” without much preparation. Now, where are all those MDF hexes I got from eBay…?
