Age of Sail Basic Battles Game

I finally played a game using Grey Army Gaming "Basic Battles" rules and old "Broadsides" sailing ships.
The game uses 20D dice for combat resolution.
The game turned out particularly violent; either side could have won the battle. During the game it was back and forth who would win the battle. In the end the Red fleet managed to sink the last blue ship.

  1. A close run thing game, looks good especially with the sunk ships rigging and sails.

    1. I was surprised at the outcome of the game. The "Broadsides" ships are nice little playing pieces for games like this.

    1. It was good to get a game in. It's been 2 months since the last game. I actually bought a second copy of the game for the models.

  3. John, glad to see you are posting again after the Christmas break, that looks like it was an exciting game. I haven't seen ship models like these before, nor the rules you mention, so I am curious to know more...

  4. The models came from an old Milton Bradley game, "Broadsides" game from the 1960's. The rules are from a YouTube channel: Grey Army Gaming. They are a set of rules he made for his kids called "Basic Battles". They are a nice set of rules that could be expanded on easily. You can download the rules for free ( I gave him a donation for them).

  5. Great selection of rules. Basic Battles are very fast and playable rules. I used them in a couple of games my self last year.

  6. They are great skirmish rules that can be set up and play out in a half hour or so.
